Big Mo - Next in Line at Big Man U?
From TonyDeals:
It's safe to say that Maurice Walker has arrived on the scene. The Canadian native, fresh off of a successful AAU season with Team Takeover Canada, ended his season of summer hoops with a strong showing at last week's Nike Global Challenge. The 6'10" center was an instrumental part of Team Canada's run to the championship game, where they eventually fell to a determined Team USA East squad, in what was considered by many, one of the best games of the summer.
Now that the summer season has ended, Walker's focus has now shifted as the upcoming school year looms and his recruitment heats up. HoyaBalla caught up with Walker this past week to discuss his performance this summer, personal highlights and some of his plans for the immediate future.
Though many believe he had an absolutely outstanding summer, Walker's humility was ever present during our conversation. "I think I played alright. I didn't play so well at times at the beginning of the summer," said Maurice - a stark contrast to the rave reviews he received while participating in tournaments in Cincinnati and West Virginia (with Georgetown coach John Thompson III watching closely). While both his play and recruitment picked up steam as the summer progressed, the Adidas Super 64 tournament in Las Vegas proved to be quite a memorable experience for Maurice as he proclaimed, "I played well and got a lot of attention," setting the stage for his superb performance at the Nike Global Games.
Stellar performances like these have put Maurice Walker on the radar of many colleges, including Georgetown University. Maurice stated he is planning to visit Georgetown in "early September" and will be accompanied by his family. During his talks with the Hoyas' coach, Thompson shared the schools storied history, both academically and on the hardwood. He also provided Maurice with some valuable insight on many of the players that have had the opportunity to play at Georgetown, dubbed by many as "Big Man U."
Walker maintained that he will continue to work diligently on his "athleticism, explosiveness and conditioning" in an effort to refine his game on both ends of the court and, in preparation for his post graduate season at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. With that in mind, he has already shown an unquestioned desire to improve his game and has fared extremely well, competing at a high level against some of the top players in the U.S. and Canada. Although most have already taken notice of Maurice Walker, it may prove more gratifying to follow him on his road to success. We definitely will!
